New from Brother – new label printers with two different print technologies

The typical customers for Brother’s two new professional label printers – the TD-4420TN and TD-4520TN – can be found in the healthcare sector, warehousing and logistics, retail and the food industry. They can now benefit from two versatile new products, which can print labels in two different ways.

Label printers generally use one of two technologies to output their information, but Brother now offers two new label printers which can be used for both types of printing. The user decides which print method best meets their needs in each case.

The new Brother TD-4420TN and TD-4520TN can both print with direct thermal printing and thermal transfer. The maximum print width is 108 mm for the TD-4420TN and 105.7 mm for the TD-4520TN. The TD-4420TN prints at 152 mm per second, and the TD-4520TN at 127 mm per second.

The two print technologies cover different needs, which is why professional users with different kinds of print jobs will find it an advantage to have both methods in one machine, as it means they only need to buy one label printer.

Printers based on direct thermal printing technology print out labels using a thermal print head, eliminating the need for conventional ink ribbons and ink, and allowing more economical label production.

Labels used for direct thermal printing have a heat-sensitive top layer. These are best suited when the label only needs to last for a limited amount of time.

Thermal transfer, however, burns a clear, long-lasting print into the label. It is more expensive, but the result is a high-quality label that lasts longer.

Top of a new model range

The TD-4420TN and TD-4520TN are at the top of Brother’s versatile new TD-4 range of professional label printers. The range now includes six products, which vary widely in terms of price, function and application.

Brother has long been active on the Nordic market for professional label printers, and it is quite likely that most companies and organisations own one or more of the popular models.

In retail, for instance, they are used to label foods with barcodes and details of content, allergens and price, and they can also be used for receipts and vouchers. At pharmacies and hospitals, staff print labels for identification of drugs and patient samples.

Brother TD-4420TN

The Brother TD-4420TN is a compact label printer for thermal transfer, and can also be used for direct thermal printing. This makes it one of the most flexible label printers on the market.

It works with USB, RS-232C and wired network. The wired network card makes it easy for several users to share the label printer, and with drivers for Windows, Mac, Linux and a range of built-in emulations, it can be integrated with most IT systems.

The USB socket in the Brother TD-4420TN makes it possible to connect e.g. a barcode reader, a digital scale or an external keyboard. The label printer can also be equipped with a blade or a separate unit for automatic label cutting.

Brother TD-4520TN

In many respects the TD-4520TN and TD-4420TN are identical, for instance in the basic technology, external connections, emulations and expandability. There are, however, differences that might be important to specific customers.

The TD-4520TN can print in a higher resolution of 300 dpi, whereas the TD-4420TN has to settle for a ‘mere’ 203 dpi. In exchange the TD-4420TN is faster at 152 mm per second, compared to the TD-4520TN at 127 mm per second. Moreover, the print width is up to 108 mm on the TD-4420TN and 105.7 mm on the TD-4520TN.

Prices and delivery

The Brother TD-4420TN costs DKK 4,699 excl. VAT (DKK 5,874 incl. VAT).

The TD-4520TN is priced at DKK 5,399 excl. VAT (DKK 6,749 incl. VAT).
